Orthodontics deals with prevention, diagnosing and correction of dental and surrounding structures displacement. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment.
After completing diagnostic examinations and orthodontic treatment plan the orthodontist recommends the patient the most appropriate type of braces.
Treatment options with teenagers are greater than with adults who have stopped growing. In adult patients it is possible to use orthodontic procedures in order to align the teeth, but not the surrounding structures – except with a surgical procedure. Orthodontic check-ups should be done periodically due to child's growth and development and constant changes that occur at that age, especially if the child is wearing an orthodontic appliance.
Proper treatment conducted in collaboration between the patient and the doctor yields excellent results.

Children should start visiting an orthodontist at the age of six, after the first permanent teeth grow and in some of the following cases: crooked teeth, early loss of milk teeth, crowding of teeth, prolonged finger suckling or some other unfavourable habit, speech difficulty, problems with chewing or mouth closing.
There are two types of devices used in orthodontics: fixed braces which are attached to the teeth (the patient can not remove it him/herself) and removable braces (the patient can put it and remove it according to orthodontists's instructions).
The length of the treatment depends on various factors but it generally takes two years. Regular check-ups are performed every two to three months, and after the completion of the treatment the patients wear retainers.
